Designed by architect Jeanne Gang of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (the same firm that designed Chicago’s Willis Tower), the Shanghai Tower was an ambitious project that executed its vision perfectly-and it went on to win countless awards along the way. It opened in 2015 after being under construction for nearly eight years, along with two other skyscrapers: the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Jin Mao Tower. Located in Pudong, Shanghai, it stands at 2073 ft tall and has 128 stories. The Shanghai Tower is the world’s second-tallest building. However, after construction finished and its name was officially unveiled, it was renamed Burj Khalifa in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was president of the UAE at the time.
The building originally cost $1.5 billion USD to build and was named Burj Dubai when it opened in 2010. 160 floors-that’s over half a mile of stairs!. Dubai is one of those emirates, with Abu Dhabi serving as the capital city. Though not technically considered a country, the UAE is an independent and sovereign state that’s home to seven emirates, or territories. The Burj Khalifa is located in Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A record-breaking 828 meters (the same height as almost 200 double-decker buses stacked on top of each other). The design took into account wind, thermal expansion, vibration, and other factors that would have caused problems with other buildings. This building is an architectural masterpiece. The Burj Khalifa was built to demonstrate to the world that Dubai was not just a city of sand dunes but a thriving business community as well. It is also the tallest building in the world at 2,700 feet. The Burj Khalifa is one of the most iconic buildings in the world, having been featured in many movies and television shows.
